Addition/Subtraction

USING MANIPULATIVES FOR WORKSHEETS.

I photocopied a workbook sheet then used the real-thing (manipulatives) to do the sums. First we used 2 dices, then for the number lines we used a butterfly to jump the sums – made it much more fun than just a boring old worksheet.

How many frogs jumped off the lilypad? Progressively we got down to zero left.

Cut out the bugs, sort them into the jars then using the tally sheet add up how many bugs you have in each jar and how many all together.

I made these number lines on thick coloured cardboard and covered them with clear contact.  We printed the spider ladder worksheets for subtracting 3 from http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/numbertime/print/number_ladders/index.shtml and used a plastic spider manipulative to fill out the sheet by moving the spider back 3 places.
